The sheer reality of the event is the beginning of the obsession. Every crime has its own recipe of the evil ways of the perpetrator combined with the resolve and resources of the people solving it. Will the guilty be brought to justice? Will the case grow cold and remain a puzzle? The sinister deeds and intent can produce powerful emotions, while the science and brilliant work of forensics and detectives is a thriller in itself. The longer the suspense remains, the better. Crime shows that contain actual footage, even if combined with staged footage in order to flesh out a scene are my favorite. Because even when actors are being used to portray the characters, as long as the event is real and the facts genuine, then there's nothing "virtual" about this reality. It's been intriguing the human mind since the first crime took place.
